Heart & Grit Spotlight: Heart Hero vs. Holiday Competitor – Which Holiday Player Are You?

Take the Quiz

The holidays are like a big game, and everyone has their own play style. Some lead with heart, making every moment about giving and connection. Others go big, competing for the brightest lights and the most festive setup. Today, we’re talking about two holiday MVPs: the Heart Hero and the Holiday Competitor. Both bring something special to the season, and honestly, we could all learn a little from each.

Heart Hero: The Giving Player

If you’re a Heart Hero, you’re the ultimate teammate—the one who makes sure everyone feels included and cared for. You lead with kindness, whether that’s volunteering, helping a neighbor, or making time for family traditions. You’re the player who sees the whole court and makes the perfect assist.

One of my favorite memories giving back during the holidays was when we would shop with families at Purdue. Every year around the holidays we would get together as a team and meet the families at Meijer. In this time the kids would be so excited to get to pick out a couple gifts. Seeing their smiles and laughter would make the team understand the importance of giving back and helping out. More importantly the relief on the parents' face of being able to really provide for their kids. Some families had mentioned that there wasn't going to be any presents that year if it wasn't for Purdue giving back to them. Us as players were more than happy to spend that time with the families and get to know them for the hour or 2 hours we were with them. It just shows the importance of community and that you don't understand other peoples situation unless you take the time to listen to them.

Mason’s Advice for Heart Heroes:

Your generosity is incredible, and it’s what makes the holidays meaningful. But even the best teammates need a timeout. Make sure you take a moment for yourself too. The holidays aren’t just about giving; they’re about enjoying the game with the people you love.

Holiday Competitor: The Big Playmaker

If you’re a Holiday Competitor, you’re going for the championship of cheer. Biggest tree? Brightest lights? Most cookies baked? You’re all in. You love making the season unforgettable, and you’re not afraid to go big to make it happen.

Along with our yearly card game tradition at grandma's house, we recently have added a gingerbread house making competition. To say the least I always lose at this! I have never been talented in the arts and crafts department. But it is fun to see everyone's creativity with creating your very own gingerbread house. I may lose because I want to eat the house before it's even built, but hey, who doesn't want an appetizer when it is right in front of your face!

Mason’s Advice for Holiday Competitors:

Your drive is impressive, and it makes the season exciting. But remember; the best prize isn’t the biggest display, it’s the memories you create along the way. Let someone else score a few points too, and enjoy the team win.

Why We Need Both

Every great team needs heart and hustle. Heart Heroes remind us what matters most, and Holiday Competitors bring the energy that makes the season unforgettable. Together, they make the holidays magical.
